The Materia Medica of the Hindus

Udoy Chand Dutt, with a glossary of Indian plants by George King. Calcutta, 1877.

What it is

A compilation, in English, of the drugs of classical Hindu medicine. For each plant it gives the Sanskrit and vernacular names, what the Sanskrit medical writers said of it, and the prescriptions in which physicians used it, with the original Sanskrit verses in footnotes.

Whose knowledge it records

The knowledge of the Sanskrit medical tradition (Charaka, Sushruta, Chakrapani Datta's Chakradatta, the Bhavaprakasa and other treatises) and of the kavirajas, practicing Ayurvedic physicians, who supplied the drugs. Compiled and translated by Udoy Chand Dutt, an Indian civil medical officer; the plants were identified at the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta.
