Build a simple skin routine

The routine that works is the one you actually do. This one is three things in the morning, two at night, and one rule for anything new. It is built from dermatologists' basic guidance, and it does not need a shelf of products.

Show steps

  1. Current step

Step 1: Wash twice a day, and after sweating

Morning and evening, wet your face with lukewarm water, apply a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser with your fingertips, rinse, and pat dry with a soft towel. Skip washcloths, scrubbing and alcohol-based cleansers.

    Light effortPractice~3 min
    Why it is here
This is the AAD's face-washing guidance almost word for word: gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, fingertips, twice a day and after sweating. Scrubbing and hot water irritate skin rather than clean it better.
    Effort
Under two minutes, twice a day.
    What is known
Standard dermatologist guidance (AAD). A hygiene habit, not a health claim.
    Be careful of
    • AllergyTry any new product on a small patch of skin for a day or two before using it on your face. Stop if it stings, burns or brings up a rash.

    Daily Wash

A daily face and body wash.

Optional. The step above works without it.

  2. Step 2: Moisturize when skin is dry or itchy

After washing, while the skin is still slightly damp, apply a moisturizer to any area that feels dry or tight. Be gentle around the eyes. Hands, elbows and heels often need something thicker than the face does.

    Light effortPractice~1 min
    Why it is here
The AAD advises moisturizing dry or itchy skin right after washing, when it holds water best. Thicker balms suit the places lotion does not reach.
    Effort
    A minute, as needed.
    What is known
Dermatologist guidance (AAD). Which moisturizer is a matter of skin type and preference.
    Be careful of
    • AllergyTry any new product on a small patch of skin for a day or two before using it on your face. Stop if it stings, burns or brings up a rash.
    • ConditionSkin that stays dry, cracked or itchy despite regular moisturizing can be a skin condition. That is a dermatologist's question.

    Body Balm

A thick balm for hands, elbows and dry patches.

Optional. The step above works without it.

  3. Step 3: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on days you are outside

In the morning, after moisturizer, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to your face, ears and neck. Reapply if you are out for hours or sweating.

    Light effortPractice~1 min
    Why it is here
Dermatologists' standing advice for exposed skin; the AAD's beard guidance, for instance, recommends a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher during the stubble phase.
    Effort
    One minute in the morning.
    What is known
The plan follows dermatologist guidance (AAD) on SPF 30 or higher. This site does not evaluate sunscreen products or make claims about them.
    Be careful of
    • AllergyTry any new product on a small patch of skin for a day or two before using it on your face. Stop if it stings, burns or brings up a rash.
    • NoteSunscreen is a regulated product; follow the directions on the one you choose.
  4. Step 4: Shave with less irritation

Shave at the end of a shower when hair is soft. Use a fragrance-free shaving oil, cream or gel, shave in the direction of growth, rinse the razor after each pass, change blades every five to seven shaves, and moisturize immediately after.

    Moderate effortPractice~5 min
    Why it is here
Every one of those details is in the AAD's shaving guidance for reducing razor irritation and ingrown hairs.
    Effort
    Five minutes, on shaving days.
    What is known
Technique guidance from dermatologists (AAD). No study is cited for it here.
    Be careful of
    • ConditionRazor bumps that keep returning or become painful are a reason to see a dermatologist rather than to shave closer.
  5. Step 5: Change one thing at a time

Add or swap one product at a time, patch-test it first, and give it two to three weeks before judging it. Write down what you changed and when.

    Light effortPractice
    Why it is here
If you change three things at once and your skin reacts, you cannot tell which one did it. One change at a time keeps the routine honest.
    Effort
    No time; a rule.
    What is known
A method for finding out what suits your skin. No study is cited; it is how you make a fair test.
    Be careful of
    • AllergyTry any new product on a small patch of skin for a day or two before using it on your face. Stop if it stings, burns or brings up a rash.

When it is a clinician’s question

Stop working the plan and ask a professional if you notice

  • Acne that is painful, scarring, or not settling with gentle care.
  • A mole or spot that changes in size, shape or color, or that bleeds.
  • A rash, itch or dryness that does not settle in a few weeks.
