Garcinia cambogia

A tart fruit from India and Southeast Asia whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), sold for appetite control and weight loss. It is unclear whether it helps with weight, and several cases of liver damage have been reported in people taking garcinia products.

Serious warning

It may be unsafe to take garcinia cambogia products, including multi-ingredient products that contain it: several cases of liver damage have been reported, some of them severe, though this appears uncommon (NCCIH).

Traditional use

A tree of the evergreen forests of India and Southeast Asia. The fruit has been used as a tea in folk medicine for inflammation and stomach complaints, and the rind has long been used in cooking and as a food preservative. Today products with HCA from the rind are sold for appetite control and weight loss.
