Bromelain
A group of protein-digesting enzymes from pineapple stem and fruit, sold for pain and swelling after surgery, sinus trouble, joint pain and sore muscles. Some studies suggest it may ease symptoms after wisdom tooth surgery; a prescription bromelain product is used by professionals on severe burns.
Traditional use
Pineapple was used medicinally in South and Central America. Bromelain today is sold as a dietary supplement for pain after wisdom tooth removal, sinusitis, osteoarthritis and exercise-related muscle soreness. Separately, in 2022 the FDA approved a prescription bromelain product that health professionals apply to remove dead tissue from severe burns in adults; it is also approved in the European Union.
What studies show
- Limited
Wisdom tooth surgery: some studies suggest oral bromelain might reduce some symptoms, such as pain and swelling.
- Insufficient
Sinusitis: there is not enough high-quality research to say whether oral bromelain should be recommended.
- Insufficient
Osteoarthritis, sore muscles and other uses: very little research, or only studies of mixtures, so the effect of bromelain alone is unclear.
- Established
Severe burns (prescription only): an FDA-approved bromelain drug is applied by health professionals to remove dead tissue from severe burns, as an alternative to surgery. This is a hospital drug, not the dietary supplement.
